I'm still here!

Don't worry! I am still here! You didn't think I would give up that easy did you? Well, I just have to say that I had a busier week and didn't have a whole lot of time to blog, but here's what is happening:

I weigh in (to myself) every Monday morning. I have lost a little over 10 lbs which I think is totally awesome. I don't know if it is just body shock or water weight, but I am hoping to keep going from there.

I finished my no carbs for two weeks goal! I must say that the only time I broke the rule was with the sacrament on Sunday. Awesome. I love my carbs, but I haven't really missed them! I haven't had chocolate in over 2 weeks which is crazy for me! I seriously used to need my chocolate fix every single day. I think I was a tad addicted. Now I don't ever have cravings.
The end of the 2 weeks was getting a little hard. "If I have to have eggs for breakfast one more day I..." yeah. This morning I had a bowl of Bran flakes... and almost died it was so good!

I am excited to be able to make more normal meals now, just with adjustments. Like making my whole wheat pizza dough, whole wheat tortillas, etc. Let me just say I LOVE this thing that I got for Christmas from my parents this year:

It's a wheat grinder and it's incredible!

ok, So one thing I might need a little help about. Exercise. I have always hated it because I am not good at it. I am a closet exerciser... I hate going outside because I am so embarrased about the way I look. Evan got me an elyptical trainer at Easter... and I have liked that a lot, but it gets a little boring day after day. Luckily this week I got a hold of seasons 1-6 of the biggest loser to watch while I work out! That is the most motivating! but any new ideas are welcome! :)

Ok another thing, Our neighbors invited us over for games and dessert tonight. I never know how to say, "no thanks..." or do I just have a little bit? Or do I tell them that I am trying to lose weight? It's just kind of a weird thing to bring up you know? Especially after she made a nice dessert... Seems silly, but I have to think all of these things through.

Last and not least. Here is a goal outfit (or something like it).

I have always had too much junk in the trunk to wear this... But I have always wanted to wear a pencil skirt. I see it in the near future...

Alright... I am not giving up. I can do this. I am doing great. It's going to take time...

  1. Here's my advice---about the games & dessert with the neighbors, totally go, but just eat a little dessert. Really, losing weight and keeping it off is about a lifestyle change--not dieting and deprivation. You'll still lose weight if you're paying attention to portion sizes and creating a calorie deficit each day (=spending more calories through activity and exercise than you're taking in through food). Depriving yourself and having a list of 'bad foods' will just make you frustrated. So just go and have fun; relax and enjoy a small portion size of the yummy dessert. One helping. Savor the flavor of it. They say that putting your fork down between each bites draws out the experience so your brain can really enjoy the taste and be satisfied with less.

Okay, about the exercise: really, the most effective way to exercise is to find something active that you love doing. It's so much easier to exercise when you're having fun (or when you're doing something you don't love as much, but with fun people--training for that half marathon with my sister totally got me through the days I didn't want to run---it was a great time to chat and catch up on each other's lives. We each ended up looking forward to that time as a time to really talk and get advice). If you don't have any active things you like, most rec centers have a whole variety of different exercise classes they teach and it's "pay per session" so you're not stuck if you hate it. I know you said you prefer exercising alone, but sometimes having the motivation of a class that you already paid for helps--AND you don't have to plan your own well-rounded workout; you just do what they tell you to.

Last, try to cross-train. Not only will it keep you from getting bored, it'll prevent injury from using the same muscle groups or joints too often. Cardio is great for losing weight, but doing toning or core-strengthening exercises too will increase your lean muscle mass, and lean muscle burns a LOT of calories even while you're at rest.

Specific suggestions? That Wii game (EA sports Active Fitness) was awesome for doing at home. Step aerobics, kickboxing, walking (leading up to running as you feel more fit), swimming, biking, hiking, racquetball (so easy to learn even if you're like me and not athletic, and so fun--plus it burns a TON of calories per hour), tennis, or power yoga are a few ideas. Having something to train for (like a 5K) is really motivating and keeps you from getting bored or feeling like you're exercising just to.....exercise. Basically, it's good to start substituting some inactive hobbies with more active things, even if it's just going out for a walk or working in the garden instead of sitting and watching a movie or whatever, especially if you find that movies are a "snack trigger" for you.

Okay--sorry I rambled on so long. Love you Kels!

  2. Kelsey...I am so proud of you!!! You are doing amazing. I totally agree with Mandy. You need go to your friend's house for sure. You could even say, "I'll just have a bite of Evan's." They won't care!! You are a great inspiration to me. I want to do better too. Thanks for your new blog. It is so helpful to others too. I was thinking about exercise and I remember how much you love to hike. Maybe just start with a walk each day. Pretty soon it becomes addicting! (Especially if you can talk to a friend or Evan while you are doing it!) I love you so much!
    Love, MOM

  3. Kelsey - How inspiring you are. I've been waiting for your next post. You are motivating me to get going. I think you are GREAT! I think it's helpful if you tell your friend when she invites you that you're trying to watch it and could you bring fruit or something. They don't jam it down your throat if they know ahead...
Keep it up. I just might join you in changing.
    Love you, aunt Susan

  4. Kels - you are doing a great job! I have recently gone through a similar situation. I went through Jillian Michaels program called, "Making the Cut". It worked amazingly. I have lost about 20 pounds, and I am training for a 1/2 marathon. And, you being a fan of the biggest loser, you can only imagine how I felt doing a Jillian program...she wanted me to die, I'm pretty sure of it. But now that it's done, it was worth it. I had to go over to friends houses and decline desserts; I think you can be super nice about, and stay to your goals. Brodie would always eat it, I would just politely say "no thanks". I never felt comfortable telling them that I was on a big weight loss program, ya know? Anyway, Keep it up - you will just start feeling better and better! (not only physically, but mentally as well) Sorry about this huge comment!!

  5. Kelsey Kelsey Kelsey. Can I just say I love you?! I look up to you so much, and your new goals have led me to be more cautious about my eating habits. (Not trying to lose weight or anything, just improving my habits.) If you ever have a craving for chocolate though, I read that you can drink hot chocolate and that it makes you satisfied just the same. But the fact that you haven't had chocolate is amazing! Oh, and I can't wait to see you in the pencil skirt!

Love, Your Little Sister Maddie :)
